Visiting Topkapı Palace in 2026.
Topkapı Palace opens daily except Tuesdays. The main entrance is the Imperial Gate (Bab-ı Hümâyun) beside Hagia Sophia in Sultanahmet; expect airport-style security and allow at least three hours on site if you also want to see the Harem.

The palace also closes on the first day of Ramazan Bayramı (Eid al-Fitr) and Kurban Bayramı (Eid al-Adha). Dates rotate; check the day before you visit.

Tram (recommended)
T1 line to Sultanahmet, then 7 min walk uphill past Hagia Sophia.
From Taksim
F1 funicular to Kabataş, transfer to T1 towards Bağcılar, alight at Sultanahmet.
From Sabiha Gökçen (SAW)
Havabüs to Kadıköy, ferry to Eminönü, T1 tram — about 90 minutes.
From Istanbul Airport (IST)
M11 metro to Gayrettepe, M2 to Vezneciler, T1 tram — about 80 minutes.
Taxi
Around £5–£8 from Beyoğlu; drivers set down at Bab-ı Hümâyun Sokağı near Hagia Sophia.
Walking
20 minutes downhill from the Grand Bazaar via Nuruosmaniye; scenic and mostly pedestrianised.
At the entrance
- Pass through the Imperial Gate (Bab-ı Hümâyun) into the First Courtyard, which is free to enter.
- Walk 200 m across the outer courtyard to the ticket kiosks in front of the Middle Gate (Bab-üs Selâm).
- Present your ticket (or Museum Pass) and clear the airport-style security check.
- Buy the separate Harem ticket at the small kiosk inside the Second Courtyard, opposite the Divan.
- Store nothing at Topkapı itself — there is no cloakroom.
Dress code and etiquette
There is no formal dress code for the palace grounds. The exception is the Chamber of the Holy Relics (Hırka-i Saadet), which is an active place of prayer: cover your shoulders and knees, keep voices low, and follow any staff request for silence during Qur’an recitation. Photography without flash is permitted in most rooms; a small number are marked as camera-free.
Best time to visit
The palace is busiest between 10:30 and 13:00 from May to September, when cruise ship arrivals and group tours coincide. Two windows are consistently quieter: the first hour after opening (09:00 – 10:00) and the last two hours of the day (16:00 – 18:00 in summer). Avoid Sunday afternoons and public holidays if you can. Spring (April to mid-May) and early autumn (mid-September to late October) give you the best light in the Fourth Courtyard and open gardens.
Food, water and toilets
Konyalı Restaurant on the Fourth Courtyard terrace serves a set menu with the best Bosphorus view on the peninsula, but you can bring a bottle of water and simple snacks in. Public toilets are in the First and Second Courtyards; the Fourth Courtyard toilet block near Konyalı is quieter.

How do I get to Topkapı Palace?
The easiest route is the T1 tram to Sultanahmet stop, a seven-minute walk uphill past Hagia Sophia to the Imperial Gate. From Taksim, take the F1 funicular to Kabataş, then transfer to the T1. Taxis from Beyoğlu are quick outside rush hour.
Can I bring a backpack or suitcase into the palace?
Small backpacks are allowed and pass through security at the Imperial Gate. Full-sized suitcases and large bags are refused; there is no cloakroom on site, so leave luggage at your hotel or at Sirkeci Station's paid left-luggage counter, a ten-minute walk downhill.
Is Topkapı Palace wheelchair accessible?
The main courtyards are accessible on flat cobblestones, but several key rooms — including parts of the Harem, the Imperial Treasury and the Sacred Relics Chamber — involve short flights of steps with no ramps. Accessible toilets are in the Second Courtyard near the Divan.
