About
An independent, Istanbul-based guide to Topkapı Sarayı.
topkapipalace.co is written and maintained by a small editorial team living in Istanbul. We visit the palace on average twice a month, watch the ticket kiosks and Harem queue, and rewrite our guide when prices, hours or closures change. Last updated 24 July 2026.
Why we started this site
Most English-language coverage of Topkapı Palace is either a 400-word travel-blog skim or a paid tour operator’s landing page. Neither answers the practical questions visitors actually ask: Is the Harem ticket worth £20 on top? How long does the security queue take in July? Which rooms are usually closed for conservation this year? We built this guide to answer those questions honestly, and to introduce the palace as a piece of Ottoman civil architecture — not just a tick on a Sultanahmet itinerary.
How we research
- Primary observation. We time queues, walk the same routes, and note conservation closures at first-hand. Where a section is currently closed (for example the Circumcision Room in mid-2026) we say so on the relevant page.
- Official sources. We cross-check ticket prices against the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Culture and Tourism schedule and the Millî Saraylar (National Palaces Administration) notices. When those change, our prices are updated within a working week.
- Scholarship. Our historical writing leans on peer-reviewed authorities on Ottoman court culture — notably Halil İnalcık’s work on imperial administration and Gülru Necipoğlu’s architectural history of the palace (Architecture, Ceremonial and Power: The Topkapı Palace, MIT Press, 1991), still the standard reference in the field.
- Reader corrections. If you spot something out of date or wrong, contact us — we credit corrections and log the date on the affected page.
Editorial standards
We do not accept payment for coverage. When we recommend a tour operator, guide or nearby restaurant, it is because we or a trusted local colleague have used them at our own cost. Ticket prices on this site are quoted in £ GBP for our English-speaking readership, with the official TRY amount alongside so you can reconcile at the gate. Currency conversions use the mid-market rate on the date in the page’s “last updated” stamp.
The team
Editorial team
Three writers and a fact-checker, all Istanbul residents. Between them they hold degrees in Ottoman history, art history and translation, and have collectively spent more than 300 days on site since 2018.
Reviewers
A licensed Turkish tour guide (TÜRSAB accredited) reviews our practical information pages every quarter, and an academic historian reviews our history pages annually. Reviewer initials appear at the foot of each article.
