How much does Topkapı Palace cost?

For a foreign visitor in 2026, the standard Topkapı Palace and Hagia Irene ticket is 1,700 TRY (~£47), and the Harem is a separate 700 TRY (~£20) ticket bought inside the Second Courtyard. Children under 8 enter free; 8–17s pay ~£14.

How long does it take to visit Topkapı Palace?

Two to three hours covers the main palace and courtyards. Add roughly 45 minutes if you also visit the Harem, and another 30 minutes if you want to sit at the Konyalı terrace with a view over the Bosphorus.

What days is Topkapı Palace closed?

Topkapı Palace is closed every Tuesday, plus the first day of Ramazan Bayramı and Kurban Bayramı. All other days of the year it opens at 09:00, with a summer close at 18:00 and winter close at 17:00.

Is the Harem included in the main ticket?

No. The Harem needs a separate 700 TRY (£20) ticket. It is administered as a distinct section of the museum and sells out for the day by late afternoon in high season.

Where is Topkapı Palace?

Topkapı Palace stands on Sarayburnu, the tip of the historic peninsula in Fatih, Istanbul, next to Hagia Sophia. The address is Cankurtaran, 34122 Fatih. The nearest tram stop is Sultanahmet on the T1 line.

Can you take photos inside Topkapı Palace?

Yes in most rooms, without flash. Photography is prohibited in the Chamber of the Holy Relics, in some Treasury display cases, and wherever you see a marked camera-free sign. Tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed inside buildings.

Is Topkapı Palace worth visiting?

Yes. Topkapı is the most important surviving Ottoman civil building and holds objects — the Sacred Relics, the Topkapı Dagger, the Spoonmaker's Diamond — you cannot see anywhere else. Plan half a day; three hours is a comfortable minimum.

What is the difference between Topkapı Palace and Dolmabahçe Palace?

Topkapı (1465–1856) is the older, Ottoman-classical seat with courtyards and pavilions. Dolmabahçe (1856 onwards) is the later European-neoclassical residence built on the Bosphorus. Sultans moved from Topkapı to Dolmabahçe in 1856 as the empire modernised.

Is Topkapı Palace wheelchair accessible?

The main courtyards are accessible on flat surfaces, but individual rooms in the Harem, Treasury and Sacred Relics involve short steps with no ramps. Accessible toilets are near the Divan in the Second Courtyard.

What is the Spoonmaker's Diamond?

The Kaşıkçı Elması, or Spoonmaker's Diamond, is a pear-shaped brilliant of about 86 carats set in silver and surrounded by 49 smaller diamonds. It is the highlight of the Imperial Treasury. Its name comes from a legend that a rubbish-heap scavenger sold it to a spoon-maker for three wooden spoons.

Do I need to book Topkapı Palace tickets in advance?

You do not have to, and the on-site price is the same. But in high season (June–September) advance booking through the official muze.gen.tr site saves 20–40 minutes at the ticket queue. The Harem ticket cannot be pre-booked and must be bought on site.

What should I wear to visit Topkapı Palace?

There is no palace-wide dress code, but the Chamber of the Holy Relics is an active place of prayer — shoulders and knees covered, quiet voices. Otherwise dress for a lot of outdoor walking on cobblestones, with sun protection in summer and layers in winter.
